I come from the land of 10,000 lakes (actually more than 14,000), where the mosquitos hunt in packs, year-round temperatures regularly range from 110 degrees (with 80% humidity) to -10 degrees (with -30 wind chill), and for culture you go to “The Cities” of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
When my mom sent me this cell phone video of the fireflies in her backyard, it really got me missing my Minnesota home.
Minnesota is the home of Paul Bunyan, The World’s Largest Ball of Twine, award-winning theatre, the only sports team I’ll ever care about (Win Twins!), the source of the Mississippi River, and SPAM.
On top of all that, there’s a lot of great music coming out of Minnesota these days! So in honor of my home state, here’s a Minnesota Mixtape to brighten up your Monday.
Roma Di Luna
Bethany Larson and the Bee’s Knees
The Johnson Twins
…and you didn’t actually think I could end a Minnesota-themed music post without Bella Ruse, did you?
Because I’m thrilled with the project, it was shot in Minneapolis, and it hasn’t yet made it into a Mixtape Monday… here’s the official music video for “Complicated Rhythm”
I am proud to be a Minnesotan. I miss it, and I hope to move back someday… though I’ll admit that SoCal summers are making me soft.
Do you keep up with any local or hometown bands? Listening recommendations are always appreciated!

Oh! I like that Roma di Luna song. I was thinking the singer sounded Björk-like then the music kicked in for a whole different vibe. Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome! I LOVE Roma di Luna, and they have a nice variety in their music. “Romance of Wolves” is one of my favorite songs. You should be able to use those forward and back buttons to skip to more tracks if you like!
