I get a sort of hipster-y joy out of knowing that I’ll get to be one of the elite saying “I was listening to Bella Ruse before they were famous.”
Forgive me a rambling Mixtape Monday, but I am in love with this music, and I think you will be too. This Minneapolis duo’s particular brand of minimalist folk/”cute rock” is remarkably addicting. And I’m not just saying that because I’ve known songwriter/guitarist/general musical genius Joseph Barker since I was in college, and a number of his works have provided the perfect soundtrack to my films throughout the years. I’ve always loved Joseph’s music, but when he teamed up with singer Kay Gillette to form Bella Ruse, some really special chemistry happened.
Kay’s voice is unique and soul-stirring. The melodies are infectious. The lyrics catch and resonate. And if you have the chance to see them perform live, you’ll fully understand why I adore them.
Just check out their iPhone music video for “An Animal, A Natural.” (my favorite song!)
And their latest video (by Passenger Productions) for “Gumption and Guts” (OMGPUPPETS!)
It’s no wonder they’ve already gotten play on MTV, gone on a few North American tours, and opened for Sarah McLachlan and Metric at Lilith Fair in 2010. And did I mention that they also tour in a van powered by used vegetable oil? The awesomeness never stops.
Longing to experience this goodness live? Well, you’re in luck! Bella Ruse is playing at Room 5 in Los Angeles this Wednesday, June 22 at 8:00 p.m. I’ll be there (with a camera or two, of course), and I would love it if you would join me! (we can carpool!)
Here, for your Monday listening pleasure, is “Kuhzoo” – the first full-length album from Bella Ruse. If you like it you can have it for keepsies, and support awesome independent artists!
P.S. As you may have guessed, some beautiful Jakfoto + Bella Ruse projects are in the works… stay tuned!
P.P.S. Be sure to check out the rest of the Mixtape Monday chain!
